Backyard
Beer gardens are places that are deeply rooted in German culture, but can be found all over the world. Although the service can be hectic, people usually associate these gardens with a good time with friends or family.

The concept for the app Backyard was created as the first of three assessed projects in the Google Professional Certificate for UX Design. The assignment and general theme were randomly assigned.
My assignment stated that I have to create a service app for a beer garden. After brainstorming and coming of with various different ideas, I settled on three main goals:
1 – creating a lighthearted experience
2 – designing a simple and friendly interface
3 – celebrating the feeling of familiarity that can be associated with beer gardens

When going to a beer garden in the summer, most people are confornted similar problems: Uncertainty about the garden’s capacity due to large crowds, overworked and stressed staff, and long waits in front of the counters. The solution to all those problems could come from a few simple steps, that anyone can take from the comfort of their bench.

Design

My goal was to create a unique, yet familiar look with round shapes and lots of earth tones to match the overall garden theme of the brief. Since many beer gardens follow a long tradition and have been around for many years with many loyal customers, it was important for me to create a simple look that didn’t completely overshadow the beer garden itself and kept it a bit low-key with only a few slides and a smaller color palette.
